Drain Cleaning & Clogged Drains · Kitchener
Drain Cleaning in Kitchener
Every drain in Kitchener can be cleared. The useful question is why it clogged, and in this city the answer usually depends on the decade the house was built.
Drain cleaning is the most common plumbing call in Kitchener, and the same symptom means different things in different neighbourhoods. A main line that backs up on a street off Queen or Courtland in the century core is usually a clay tile drain with roots in it or a cast-iron run that has rusted into a channel. The same backup in a Forest Heights sidesplit is usually grease and a partial blockage in ABS. In a Doon South new build it is wipes, or a fitting the builder's crew glued badly. The tools are the same. The diagnosis is not.
What we do
- Augering (snaking). A cable with a head sized to the pipe. Right for most sink, tub, toilet and laundry clogs and for the first pass on a main.
- Hydro-jetting. High-pressure water that scours the pipe wall instead of punching a hole through the blockage. The answer for grease-lined kitchen lines and for mains with years of buildup, where the pipe is sound enough to take it.
- Camera inspection and locating. A camera down the line and a locator on the surface that tells us where in the yard the problem is and how deep. This is how a repeat clog becomes a diagnosis rather than a subscription.
- Root cutting. The old maples and the city boulevard trees on the core streets find every joint in a clay drain. Roots get cut, and then you decide between cutting them every couple of years or fixing the pipe.
- Clean-out installation. Many Kitchener houses have no accessible clean-out on the main, so every service goes through a toilet flange or the roof vent. Adding one makes every future job cheaper and faster.
Clay tile and cast iron in the century core
Under the basement floors of downtown, Cedar Hill, Victoria Park and Mount Hope, the sanitary drain is often vitrified clay tile in short lengths, and the run to the street is the same. Every joint is a place for roots to enter and for sections to shift when the ground heaves in a freeze or settles in a wet spring. Inside the house the stack and the horizontal runs are cast iron, which corrodes to a rough interior that catches everything and eventually rusts through along the bottom.
A camera shows this clearly: root masses at the joints, a belly where the pipe has sagged, scaling, a section that has collapsed. The honest advice is that cleaning buys time, and the camera tells you how much. A scaled but intact line might go years. A pipe with a belly clogs at the belly every time. A collapsed section needs replacing, by digging or lining, and that is quoted separately once you know what you have. Anyone buying a century house in the core should have the sewer camera-inspected before closing; it is one of the cheapest bits of due diligence there is.
Grease in the 1960s-80s rings
The commonest repeat call in Forest Heights, Stanley Park, Heritage Park and Country Hills is the kitchen sink. Fifty years of grease has cooled on the ABS or cast-iron wall until the bore is a fraction of what it was, and a plunger opens a channel that closes again in a month. Chemical drain cleaners rarely clear it and are hard on the trap and on whoever opens it next. Jetting the line clean back to the stack is the fix, and it usually holds for years.
Floor drains and the spring backup
A basement floor drain that backs up only in a heavy storm, on the low ground along Schneider Creek or near Victoria Park, is usually the sewer surcharging rather than a clog. Clearing it will not stop it. A backwater valve will, and in many of the 1960s-80s houses disconnecting the weeping tile from the sanitary sewer into a sump pit is part of the same fix. Both are covered on the sump pump and backwater valve page. A floor drain that backs up every time the washer empties is a partial blockage in the main between the laundry and the street, and that one we clear.
New builds: wipes and workmanship
In Doon South, Huron Park and Trussler the drains are new ABS and the clogs are the ordinary kind. Wipes, whatever the package says, do not break down and are the single biggest cause of main-line clogs in new houses. The other cause is a fitting that was dry-fitted and never glued, or a trap arm run without slope. Those show up in the first couple of years and are a repair, not a cleaning.
What the visit looks like
You describe which drains are slow and whether it is one fixture or everything on the lowest floor. One fixture is a local clog. Everything low is the main. The plumber clears the line, runs the camera if the history suggests more than a one-off, and shows you what is there. You get a straight answer on whether this is done or whether the pipe has a bigger problem, and a written quote for anything beyond the cleaning before that work starts.
What is not drain cleaning
Weeping tile around the foundation is part of the waterproofing system rather than the sanitary drain, and a wet basement with clear drains is a waterproofing job and a different trade. Septic fields on rural properties toward New Hamburg or Breslau are a different licence. We will say which one you have.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my basement floor drain gurgle when the toilet flushes?
The main drain downstream of the floor drain is partly blocked, or the venting is compromised, so the flush pushes air back up the nearest open drain. In the century core it is often roots or scale in a clay or cast-iron main. A camera inspection tells you which, and the line gets cleared or, if it is collapsed, quoted for repair.
Should I camera-inspect the sewer before buying an older Kitchener house?
Yes, if it is in the core or any street with clay tile drains. A camera shows roots, bellies, offsets and collapses that a home inspection cannot, and a sewer replacement is one of the more expensive surprises a century house can hold. It is a small cost against the price of the house.
Are drain cleaning chemicals safe for my pipes?
They are hard on old cast iron, hard on the trap, and hard on the person who opens the pipe afterwards, and they rarely clear a grease-lined line for long. A plunger or hand auger is fine for a simple clog. For anything that comes back, have the line cleaned properly and find out why.
